Treat yourself to a new toothbrush to start the new year. Chances are, you’re probably close to being due for a new brush anyway, and there’s something fun about picking a brand new toothbrush in a favorite color to start the year. #2: Go Back to Brushing Basics
It’s easy to skimp on toothbrushing when you’re in a hurry, but all it takes to do the job right is two minutes. Set a timer, and focus on getting every side of every tooth:
- Spend 30 seconds on the backs of your bottom teeth.
- Spend 30 seconds on the fronts of your bottom teeth.
- Spend 30 seconds on the backs of your top teeth.
- Spend 30 seconds on the fronts of your top teeth.
#3: Start a Tongue Brushing Habit
Want extra credit points and even fresher breath? Don’t forget to brush your tongue, which can also suffer from a buildup of bacteria. Simply gently brush your tongue from front to back and side to side every time you brush. You’ll have a healthier mouth, better breath, and even an improved sense of taste!
#4: Commit to Flossing
You know you’re supposed to do it, and it doesn’t have to take long. Time yourself doing it, and you’ll see, it only takes an extra 45-60 seconds to ensure your teeth and gums are as healthy as they can be. Whether you go with traditional floss or the newer toothpick-style floss, you’ll get the same benefits, so choose whichever kind actually helps you get the job done. Bonus: no more guilt when your dentist asks if you’ve been flossing!
#5: Schedule Professional Cleanings Twice a Year
While we strive to make your dental cleaning as comfortable and even enjoyable as possible, we accept that the dentist’s office is probably never going to be your favorite place to hang out. But making sure to get your twice-yearly cleanings gives you a better chance of only seeing us on those two occasions — rather than repeatedly for cavity fillings, crowns, root canals and beyond!
